Summary

Kitepower participated as a development partner in Windvogel, a kinetic light installation by Studio Roosegaarde created as part of the Icoon Afsluitdijk design innovation program. Windvogel combines airborne wind energy technology with poetic light design, featuring energy-generating kites equipped with illuminated cables that create a dynamic and immersive play of green light as they move through the sky. The installation formed one of three visionary designs developed by Daan Roosegaarde and his multidisciplinary team of designers and engineers.

The project brings to life the long-held vision of Dutch astronaut and inventor Dr. Wubbo Ockels (†2014), a pioneer of airborne wind energy who imagined a future powered by flying energy systems. Windvogel was exhibited from 17 November 2017 to 21 January 2018 near Den Oever on the Afsluitdijk, transforming renewable energy into a public, experiential artwork. The creative process behind the installation is documented in the film 32 KM, which follows Studio Roosegaarde during the realization of the project.

Windvogel was launched within Icoon Afsluitdijk, a Dutch Government-commissioned program aimed at strengthening the innovative identity of the iconic 32-kilometre dike by connecting water safety, heritage, energy, and mobility. The project received international recognition, winning the Shenzhen Global Design Award, the Dezeen Design Project of the Year Award, and the Europe 40 Under 40 Award.
