Kitepower is on a mission to contribute to a more sustainable world by flying kites that generate electricity. Founded as a spin-out of Delft University of Technology, we are developing our first commercial system to power farms, construction sites and (island) communities with renewable airborne wind energy.

We are looking for an intern to join our hardware team in Delft. The hardware team is responsible for designing, developing and maintaining all physical components of our systems, for example the Kite Control Unit (KCU), kites and ground station. You will have a challenging internship in renewable energy to apply your academic knowledge and gain valuable working experience.

😃 We offer:

  • Valuable working experience in a leading renewable energy start-up
  • The freedom of taking responsibility and ownership of your own projects within a bigger development
  • An opportunity to make the world a better place
  • An open, supportive and inspiring working environment
  • A great team atmosphere in a fast-growing start-up!

Job Tasks

One of these three main projects:

  • Improving the Ram Air Turbine, used for generating onboard power to fly indefinitely, at different aspects: protective cage/duct, shape and size of the blades and improving the inhouse production process of the blades.
  • Continuing development on our kite testing and characterization platform, to support prototyping scaled kites to facilitate the derivation of flight paths and controller settings for our larger kites of the system. This will also help to validate software models for kite design.
  • Improving an automated tether wear inspection system, working on a previous research where convolutional neural network (CNN)- based image classification was used to automate the inspections after each flight. Improvements possible in system design refinement, machine learning optimization, hardware integration and performance validation.

Next to that we can use your help for:

  • Identify and troubleshoot electrical and mechatronic issues in the current designs to improve system performance and reliability.
  • Conduct thorough testing and validation of mechatronic and electronic components to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Create and maintain documentation related to electrical and mechatronic designs, including schematics, PCB layouts, and assembly instructions.

Job Profile

  • Passionate about sustainability and renewables
  • Studies in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Aerospace Engineering or related
  • Experience with battery systems and energy storage
  • Knowledge about basic aerodynamics
  • Problem-solving and curious mindset
  • Good communication and organization skills
  • Fluent written/spoken English
  • Good observation skills and ability to give reliable feedback
  • Knowledge of relevant safety standards and regulations for electrical and mechatronic systems.

And if you have more talents to offer… let us know!
